Business Analyst Jobs in the UK: What Recruiters Expect

Business Analyst Jobs in the UK: What Recruiters Expect

Important things to know

A while ago, I spoke to someone trying to break into a Business Analyst role in the UK. She had done everything right. Courses, certifications, multiple CV rewrites. She understood Agile, could talk about stakeholder management, and knew all the right terminology but after dozens of applications, she hadn’t gotten a single interview. When I looked at her CV, the issue wasn’t capability. It was how her experience was presented. It reads like a list of responsibilities. Requirements gathering, documentation, supporting delivery. All correct, but none of it answered the question recruiters are actually asking. What difference did you make?

That’s something I see a lot when reviewing profiles for UK BA roles.

There’s usually a strong focus on tools and tasks. Jira, Confluence, user stories, workshops but very little clarity on impact. And in a competitive market, that’s what decisions are based on. From a hiring manager’s perspective, the thinking is simple. Can this person step into a live project and improve something? Not do they know Agile. Not have they used Jira. Can they handle ambiguity, work with stakeholders who don’t agree, and move work forward? That’s the job.

In reality, Business Analysis is rarely as structured as it’s taught. Requirements are often incomplete. Stakeholders change their minds. Priorities shift. You’re expected to bring clarity where none exists.

So when someone says they have gathered requirements, it doesn’t say much. But when they explain how they navigated conflicting inputs, identified gaps, and helped a team deliver something measurable, it becomes meaningful. The difference is small, but it is usually what determines who gets shortlisted. In her case, we reframed just one project. We focused on the problem, what she did, and what changed as a result.

That alone made a difference. She started getting responses. Same background. Same skills. Just clearer evidence of value. If you’re applying for Business Analyst roles in the UK, it’s worth taking a step back and looking at how you present your experience. Not just what you have done, but what improved because you were involved. That shift tends to change everything.
